Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. While a normal spine has certain curves when viewed from the side – a natural curve at the neck, one at the lumbar region, etc., the normal spine looks straight when viewed from the back, and only contains the natural curves.

There are different conditions that cause certain abnormal curvatures to the spine, not all of them are scoliosis. Kyphosis is a curvature of the spine that can be seen from the side only, where the spine is bent forward, and the person has lost or is missing some of the natural curve of the spine. Lordosis is the opposite curve of the spine – seen from the side only, where the spine is bent backwards. Scoliosis is yet a different type of curvature, where the curve can be seen from the back, and the bones of the spine twist together much like a corkscrew.
